METU Virtual Reality Therapy Application
This TÜBİTAK-supported VR project was developed to support therapeutic processes for children experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. It includes five forest-themed therapy rooms operated under the guidance of a psychological counseling specialist.
Project Summary
This TÜBİTAK-supported VR project was developed to support therapeutic processes for children experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder. It includes five forest-themed therapy rooms operated under the guidance of a psychological counseling specialist.
Project Purpose and Challenges
The project aimed to support children affected by trauma through a controlled, repeatable and reassuring digital environment. In conventional therapy, expressing abstract emotions can be difficult for children, so the system had to transform therapeutic methods into clear and interactive VR scenarios.
İkartu Dinamik Solution
As İkartu Dinamik, we designed a calm forest-based VR environment with separate therapy rooms for mindfulness, relaxation, emotional expression, symbolic transformation and emotional release. The experience was structured so that a specialist could guide the child safely while the child interacted naturally with objects through hand tracking.
Technology Infrastructure
The solution used real-time 3D scene management, VR interaction design, hand tracking, scenario flow control and performance optimization. Visual, auditory and interaction layers were designed to preserve comfort and reduce cognitive load.
Scenarios and Implementation Steps
1. Mindfulness meditation in the forest.
2. Deep relaxation journey.
3. Expressing bodily emotions through drawing.
4. Emotion forest with symbolic tree transformations.
5. Releasing negative emotions by attaching symbolic objects to a balloon.

Results and Field Success
The field study was successfully conducted with traumatized children in Adıyaman. The project demonstrated how VR can support therapeutic processes with controlled scenarios, safe guidance and repeatable experience design.
